Turkeys

The domesticated turkey is a large poultry bird.  The modern domesticated turkey descends from the wild turkey, one of the two species of turkey, in the pastocellated turkey was also domesticated.

The turkey is raised throughout temperate parts of the world and is a popular form of poultry, partially because industrialised farming has made it very cheap ofr the amount of meat it prouces.  The female is referred to as a hen and the chick as a poult.  In the US, the male is refereed to as a tom, while in Europe, he is a stag.  The average lifespan for a turkey is ten years.

There are several colours available in turkeys, ranging from white, buff, brown and bronze.  The fleshy protuberance atop the beak is the snood and the one attached to the underside of the beak is known as a wattle.

Despite the name, turkeys have no direct relation to the country of Turkey and are a native to North America.

We sometimes have Turkey poults available for sale.

These are some of our young Turkeys in the growing pen, just before being moved outside.
